How to Keep Your Information Safe in the Internet

In this time and age, it’s almost unavoidable to give our personal information on certain websites. Sadly, that information won’t be always safe and criminals could easily access any personal knowledge about you. To help you avoid that, we’ve listed down some tips on how a busy person like you could protect your data over wireless channels.

  1. Exercise Caution When Using Social Media

Although social networking sites might seem like a safe place to share more intimate details about your life, you should still be vigilant about what you post on these networks. Even a seemingly harmless detail, such as your address or birthday, can be used by criminals for some dangerous applications.

To avoid this, simply personalize the security settings of your social media accounts. If you share a personally identifiable information (PII), make sure that the individuals who will see it are those that you trust.

  1. Minimize Purchasing Stuff Online

When making purchases online, make sure that the site you’re entering your credit card information into is a secure one. Its URL should start with ‘https’ and not just ‘http’. Also, avoid making purchases in an unsecured network and remember to logout your customer account when you’re using public devices.

  1. Back-Up Important Files in Cloud

Having a back-up of your important files on cloud is crucial if ever your devices are stolen. Cloud computing became more secure in the past years, as large technology firms like Microsoft and Amazon took control of the market. Even some hospitals and healthcare centres in Singapore have started using cloud for easy access to files, data storage and to protect confidential documents.

  1. Factory Reset Your Devices

Simply deleting an information from your phone or computer won’t permanently remove it from the device. So before throwing or selling an old device, make sure that its drives are fully wiped and that it’s given a factory reset.

Skipping this step will give the next owner an access to the most secured information on your device, even the filed that you thought were deleted.

  1. Turn Off Your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth When Not in Use

Make sure that the Wi-Fi or Bluetooth capabilities of your device disabled when not in use. Not taking this precaution allows other devices in the vicinity to get information from your device – including access to open file sharing networks. This is the reason why your network sharing settings should be set to ‘only share files with trusted devices’.

It’s never too early or too late to protect yourself online. So remember these tips, as well as the smallest details you post online that criminals can use to steal your identity or worse.

4 Ways to Lessen Your Kitchen Waste

Our trashcans, fridges and garbage disposals are filled with bones, crusts, peels and expired food day after day. Some of us are smart enough to have compost piles in their backyard, but most of us don’t and that’s what causes massive quantities of food to be thrown away daily. Luckily, you can now cut down on your waste – and save some money – by using the following tasty kitchen hacks.

  1. Make a tasty vegetable stock out of you leftover produce.

Save all the peels, skins, and stems of the vegetables that you used for your roasts, salad, stews and soups. Set these leftovers aside on a re-sealable bag or a big bowl covered with plastic wrap, and keep it in the fridge until you’re ready to cook a veggie stock out of it. Just avoid keeping it in the fridge for too long though, since these scraps can quickly rot and growing moulds in your leftovers will defeat your purpose of saving it and recooking it into a tasty stock.

Homemade vegetable stock contains lots of nutrients and can even be used as a base for sauces or soups. If you want, you can even drink it on its own – it’s really that good! In fact, you can even use it as replacement for the water you use when preparing rice. Preserve your veggie stock by storing it well in the freezer.

  1. Cook a tasty broth using the leftover bones on your meals or parties.

Just like with vegetable stock, bone broth is also delicious and nutritious, and serves as a great way to savour every last bit of goodness from the leftover bones. Fish bones and heads are the easiest to recook into a savoury broth. Simply add the leftover bones into a stockpot of water, and bring it to boil. After that, strain the broth carefully until it’s free from all the pointy fish bones.

Leftover turkey and chicken bones can be used as well. Just toss a few handful of herbs like parsley, rosemary, sage and thyme as you cook your broth to make it even tastier. Apart from the chicken and fish bones, beef bones also make a delicious broth. This can be a bit complicated though, since larger beef bones need to be broken down so that you’ll get the flavourful and nutritious stuff into your stock.

Just remember to keep an eye to your bone broth as you cook it, and make sure that you skim off the scum that rises as the broth cooks. Don’t wait to do this until you’re done cooking, or you’ll just let it fall back into the bottom of your pot.

  1. Turn your stale bagel and bread into tasty desserts.

Although I wasn’t one to request that the crusts of my bread be cut off as a kid, I’m not a huge fan of tough crusts and end pieces of bread today. Instead, I save these unwanted ends of stale bread in a reusable bag and place them in the freezer.

Whenever I’m making a recipe that requires breadcrumbs, I simply pull out a few pieces of frozen bread and crush them in the food processor until they turn into crumbs. A quick way of doing this is to give them a spin while they’re still frozen. For larger bread slices, I turn them into a delicious homemade bread pudding.

If you ever find yourself with lots of extra bagels instead, here’s a simple and tasty solution for that. Slice your stale bagels as thinly as possible, place them on a cookie sheet, drizzle with olive oil, and toast until they turn into brown bagel chips. Sprinkle the chips with sea salt, and serve it with whipped cream cheese.

  1. Save your overripe bananas by making delicious banana breads.

In some ways, bananas are considered the perfect food: sweet and soft, jam-packed with potassium and other nutrients that the body needs. Finding a perfect banana, however, is a more complicated feat since it requires much skill, and finding one is just imperfect science.

So rather than throwing away your overripe bananas, save them in a clean freezer bag and use them to make a delicious banana bread. Just remember to keep your bag of chocolate chips and walnuts on hand at all times, so you’ll be ready to make a batch whenever you get to collect enough bananas. Overripe bananas may look gross, but once they’re baked into a banana bread, they’ll definitely tasted amazing!

Now that you’ve absorbed all the clever food-saving tips as shared by some Singapore food experts and chefs, it’s now time to start cooking, eating and reducing food waste!

  1. Avocado Chocolate Juice

You read it right. Apart from incorporating it into your beauty regimen and making guacamoles out of avocados, you can also enjoy this green fruit by making healthy and tasty juices. Containing more potassium than bananas, and rich on protein, you’d definitely want to have an avocado juice as your breakfast or lunch drink.

  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1 ripe avocado
  • pinch of salt
  • chocolate syrup

  1. Add in milk, avocado and a pinch of salt into the blender, and blend it until smooth.

  1. Banana Lime Yogurt Smoothie

The first time I had this drink was when a university friend made it for me. Since then, I already loved banana lime milkshakes, and thought of it as a great light meal substitute for during snack or lunch time. Here’s my version of banana lime yogurt smoothie.

  • Juice of half a lime
  • 1 banana, thinly chopped
  • ¼ cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup low-fat milk
  • Pinch of salt

  1. Simply blend all the ingredients together. Serve and enjoy.

  1. Carrot Milk Juice

For some odd reason, some eateries in my hometown in Singapore started serving this drink as a part of their menu when I was around nine years old. I loved the drink since then and had never gotten bored of it ever. Carrots are full of vitamins so you can’t really say that it’s a bad drink to love and be addicted to.

  • 1 medium-sized carrot, finely chopped
  • 1 cup low-fat milk
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Pinch of salt

  1. Just blend all the ingredients together, until no traces of carrots are visible.
  2. If you want to turn it into a more summery drink, add some ice cubes to make a frappe out of this tasty drink.

  1. Mango Yogurt Drink

I’ve always been a huge fan of the Indian Mango Lassi at many Indian restaurants in Singapore, so I decided to make my own version of the healthy and tasty mango yogurt drink.

  • 1 cup ripened and chopped mangoes
  • ½ cup Greek yogurt
  • ½ cup low-fat milk
  • Pinch of salt

  1. Blend all the aforementioned ingredients together, and you’ll get a yummy smoothie that you’ll definitely enjoy.

  1. Pineapple Coconut Milk Juice

Pineapples are known to be great antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents. The fruit even contains bromelain which aids in improving one’s digestion. By blending it with coconut milk, you’ll avoid getting the usual cuddling of dairy products when they’re combined with acidic fruit juices like pineapple juice. Other than that, the coconut milk also gives the drink a distinctive taste that might trick you into thinking that you’re drinking an actual piña colada.

  • 1 cup of chopped pineapples
  • ⅓ cup coconut milk
  • ¾ cup low-fat milk
  • ½ teaspoon sugar
  • Pinch of salt

  1. Blend all of the ingredients together.
  2. If you want to turn it into a more summer drink, simply add a few ice cubes to make a frappe out of the drink.

Tip: Add a small pinch of cinnamon powder on top before serving to give the drink some extra flavour.

Now that you know what drinks to try, I truly hope that the aforementioned drinks will be able to kill the guilt you might be having for indulging into your guilty pleasures during the year-end celebrations that you attended. The best part about these drinks is they’re easy to make, and just delicious to drink. So what’s not to like about these refreshing juices? None.

1. Remove or Limit the use of television. Children Older than 2 years old should only watch quality TV shows for an hour or two  a day. Let them watch programs that they can learn about the history and facts about the world.  Those under 2 years old should not watch any TV shows.

3. Buy reading materials for children. Buy books that they can learn from. This may be a tool for them to develop their desires to read and become a bookworm. Those who reads a lot, learns a lot. Just be sure of the books you will let them read, those books should contain ideas and information that are true and appropriate for their age. And it is important also that they can see in you the fun that you have while reading. You must be a good example of a reader, for them to follow what you are doing.

4. Make a place and time for learning. Create a space in your house that will encourage studying and reading. Let say you have a room for your children that every time they need to study and read they will just go there. In the room you have all the reading materials that they need. This will provoke them to study.

Causes of Marriage That Doesn’t Work

Extramarital Affair

This is actually one of the common causes of a broken family. When your husband is cheating on you, it really makes you feel stabbed in your heart. It is really painful that seeing him will just make you miserable. And if ever that you decide to stay with him, the trust issue will always be there and a harmonious relationship with him will never go on.

Early Marriage

In this day and age, pre-marital sex is not anymore an issue to some people. Especially, today’s young people are liberal in this kind of matter. This is the reason why there is a rise in teen pregnancy.  Of course, the first thing that the parents will be thinking is for their son and daughter to get married. They are trying to make things right through marriage. They don’t know that this will just make things worse.  Forcing these young people to get married without their readiness to handle the toxicity of “married life” will just make it one of the useless and dreadful things to do.

If ever your young daughter gets pregnant, keep her first in your hands until they are both ready to face the married life. It doesn’t mean that you are neglecting the fact that they love each other and they want to be with each other. It’s okay, let them see each other and make the father of the baby share his responsibility. Just make sure that they can’t be together in one roof and they can’t do the same mistake again.

Some married couple can take long distance relationship but most of them cannot handle such relationship. Imagine your husband is working abroad and you have to stay with your children. He might feel so lonely there and look for another woman’s affection. It is really hard when you are in a place where in you have no one to talk to or to be with.  You need a lot of trust and self control to keep your marriage in this kind of set up.
